Anita Rogers Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition highlighting works by Jack Martin Rogers and Mandy Vahabzadeh. The exhibition will feature works on paper by British artist Jack Martin Rogers (1943-2001), complemented by a selection of Mandy Vahabzadeh’s black and white photographs. The exhibition will be on view November 18, 2024 through January 4, 2025 at 494 Greenwich Street, Ground Floor in New York City. The gallery will host an opening reception on Monday, November 18, 6-8PM; Vahabzadeh will be in attendance, as well as gallery owner and Jack Martin Rogers’ daughter, Anita Rogers. Two photographs by Anita Rogers will be on view as part of the exhibition, alongside a tender childhood portrait of Anita taken by her father.
While Vahabzadeh’s opening quote refers to her preferred medium of photography, the sentiment is equally relevant to Rogers’ sensitive pencil portraits. Rogers’ portraits on paper will be on view in this exhibition, along with a photograph the artist took of his daughter, Anita Rogers. The show will also feature two striking portraits taken by Anita Rogers herself – one of a close friend and the other of an exchange student the Rogers family hosted in their home. Vahabzadeh will exhibit photographs spanning over three decades, including images from her most recent trip to Indonesia just last year. Although separated by decades and continents, the work is united by the artists’ sensitive handling of light, keen attention to shadow, and their shared ability to give viewers a glimpse into the inner life of their subjects, whether people or places. The exhibition will bring together images of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Greece, and England. Across these various terrains, the artists offer us a window into memories of fleeting times and places.
Mandy Vahabzadeh is a Swiss-American photographer of Persian origin residing in New York City. She attended Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and Parsons School of Design. Her photographs have been exhibited in New York City, Aspen, Santa Monica, Atlanta, and Geneva, Switzerland. The gallery hosted a solo exhibition for the artist in 2020.
Jack Martin Rogers was born in Wiltshire, UK in 1943. He studied anatomy and fine art at the Birmingham School of Art. He moved to the island of Crete in Greece in 1962, which is when he began painting his most prolific work. Rogers went through many stylistic periods, ranging from fully figurative to abstract. He died in 2001, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work. Seventy-five percent of his estate is owned by his daughter, Anita Rogers. The gallery has hosted two solo exhibitions for the artist in the past.
