Anita Rogers Gallery presents HINNEMO AND RACHFAL, a two-person exhibition of works by Virva Hinnemo and Kazimira Rachfal. The works, on cardboard, canvas and handmade paper, speak to the poetic potential of the line. The exhibition will be on view through October 15. 

The exhibition features two large pieces by Virva Hinnemo, as well as two of her small scale pieces. Rich with frenetic energy, Hinnemo’s large works are intuitive, direct and communicative. Hinnemo uses exposed cardboard as the grounds for her bold, gestural markings; she embraces and reacts to the imperfections and irregularities of her unusual medium. Rachfal has a series of oil on paper collages on view, as well as two larger oil on canvas pieces. The raw edges of the handmade paper Rachfal uses for her collages makes her work feel intimate and decidedly not minimalist. Rachfal’s works on canvas, although seemingly simple in form, are layered, multi-dimensional pieces; they are painted on all sides, creating an almost sculptural experience. Both artists draw on similar palettes of earthy tones, bringing in greys and blacks with pops of bright blue and, muted pink and yellow.

Born in 1976 in Helsinki, Finland, Hinnemo spent time growing up between Sweden, Finland and Russia. She received her BFA in painting from Parsons School of Design in 2000. Hinnemo has had exhibitions in New York, Miami, Boston, Provincetown and Stockholm. Her paintings have been reviewed by major publications, including The New York Times, Time Out New York, The New Yorker, and The New York Sun. She currently lives and works in Springs, Long Island.

Kazimira Rachfal, born in Poland, has spent most of her life in New York City as a painter. Her small-scale, colorful paintings are rooted in abstract expressionism but fall outside traditional genre conventions. Although comparable to Mondrian and Rothko, her works have a distinctly unique aesthetic. Deeply connected to nature, her geometric forms are weathered, cut short, and curved – they morph into organic forms encompassing layer upon layer. Her works emanate a serene, zen presence. Her compositions, some approaching landscapes in their depth and texture, are intimate, reflective masterpieces. Rachfal lives and works in New York City.
